Be careful where you time travel; it may be a major disappointment.

Timeline Book vs Movie

I was genuinely excited to watch this movie since I loved the book so much. I don’t think underwhelming quite describes my experience. All of the interesting science that went into the first 1/3 of the book was covered in under 2 minutes with poorly spliced together snippets that almost literally flashed over the screen. I was able to follow along because I had the entire book to fill in the gaps, but I think that someone who had just popped in the movie would have been left utterly confused. After the opening scenes, I think it would be generous to say that the film is loosely based on the book. The background stories are all changed, and if they reference any of the background from the book it’s poorly done. This is an action packed film, but I found myself just waiting for it to be over since it fell so far from the original story. I think someone who might skip the book and go straight to film wouldn’t be quite so harsh about it, but even as a movie I think it lacked what most blockbuster films have. It just seemed low budget with bad acting.

Try this film out if you must, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, take the time to read the badass book that had me flying through the pages feeling like I had truly traveled through time.
