Wally Roux, Quantum Mechanic by Nick Carr

Wally Roux is a young genius who takes it upon himself to fix the odd rifts in the space-time continuum. This isn’t an easy task, but growing into his teenage body in a new town with no friends is even harder.

This was a very short story and that, for me, is what left me feeling like something was lacking. The synopsis of the book tells of fixing a broken universe and is heavy leaning on the science fiction portion. I think this set my expectations and the book is much more a coming-of-age tale with little dabs of science peppered in. I also felt that there were sections in the book where the author would throw away opportunities for explanations or deep diving into small sub-stories (i.e. when he rips the fabric of the universe and travels to parallel dimensions…instead of colorfully detailing these adventures, they are just mentioned as one sentence and then he moves on). I think as I continued to listen to this, I better understood that it is much more geared towards young adults and is about growing up and fitting in.

This is a great book for people who like the message from the Netflix series Big Mouth about growing up and knowing you aren’t going through puberty alone…but without all the language and crudeness (which is really my favorite part of that show). This story also reminded me at times of A Wrinkle In Time without the intensity of having to save their father from imprisonment.
