The Keeper of Lost Causes
Series: Department Q Series / Book: 1

It’s a fact of life that many criminal cases go unsolved due to understaffing of police departments and sub-par investigation work. A Denmark politician is fed up with it and begins to call upon the police force for an entire department to be devoted to solving cold cases. Feeling the pressure, the higher ups decided to throw detective Carl Mørck into running the department since no one seems to get along with him anyways. The first case that is picked up by him and his mysterious foreign assistant is the 5-year-old case of the disappearance of a very important politician. Can these two pick up enough new leads to solve the puzzle? And will they find the female legislator dead or alive?
I have to say I really enjoyed this first novel in the series. It was refreshing to read a crime fiction book where the protagonist ACTUALLY follows protocol. After reading enough of this genre, I’ve become quite fed up with detectives thinking they know better, keeping information from their task forces, and receiving no punishment for going completely off book and against orders. This novel was straightforward, good detective work and was much more realistic in sleuthing.
I would recommend this novel to those who liked the book or movie adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.
