The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie

This collection of short stories is fiction based on the harsh truths of life on Indian reservations. Alexie poetically chronicles childhood memories and the struggles of coming of age with the weight of stereotypes pushing against them.

Beautiful and soul shattering are the two best descriptions I can give to this book of tales. The author writes these short stories almost as if they were poetry. His imagery and similes move the spirit; his words paint a picture so vivid you feel emotions jump off the page. Because the writing is so clear, it breaks your heart because the theme of this collection is centered on being outcasts, struggling to survive and keep dignity/traditions, and massive alcoholism. It saddened me to read how the Indians were treated by whites and how daily life was focused on getting enough food and getting the next beer in hand. Although this was a melancholy book, I loved it and will often think back on it.

I would recommend this novel to everyone really…especially if you like more poetic writing styles. Also, if you’ve seen Smoke Signals and enjoyed it you’d probably love this book since that film was based on this novel.
