Escape from the Carnival of Horrors by R.L. Stine

You find yourself with a choice to make: sneak into the locked carnival before it’s officially open so your friends don’t think you’re a loser, or run back home with your tail between your legs. Obviously the only real choice is to creep inside…but once you do scary things start to happen all around you. What do you do? Where are you going to run? And will you make it out alive?

When I saw that the PopSugar Reading Challenge for 2019 included a prompt for a “choose your own adventure” book, I knew I was going to do a throwback to some of my favorite books growing up. I LOVED reading the Goosebumps series when I was a kid, and it was also the first encounter I had ever had with a choose your own adventure novel. I would say it’s pretty obvious that I wasn’t nearly as frightened by the writing as I was when I read them as a child, but the writing is still captivating and makes you want to turn the next page to find out what happens next. I also was surprised at how invested I ended up becoming in such a short storyline. Anytime I was asked to make a decision, I would book mark that fork in the road with my finger just in case the choice I made didn’t pan out so well and I could go back and see where the other fork in the road lead. I think there would be too many re-reads possible for me to go through all of them without eventually getting a little bored, but I really loved going back and reading this (what for me is a) classic all over again.

I say give this book a shot if you read them in youth, have kids now that like to be scared, or for just a quick and fun choose your own adventure book.

Malia’s Pizza Rating: Funnel cake…which is kinda like a pizza if you put strawberries and sauce on it…kinda.
