Once Gone
Series: Riley Paige Mystery / Book: 1

Needing a break from the Wheel of Time series, I quickly picked up Once Gone. I comfortably fell back into my favorite genre for a quick read where Riley Paige is thrust back into an investigation after having fallen captive to her last target. Now she has to push her fears and memories aside in order to catch a killer who is posing their victims as dolls. Will she catch them before more women are killed? Or will she become the prey of another twisted mind?
This book was well written, and I was intrigued by the storyline, but I’ve started to become more critical of this genre after reading so many of these novels. I really have grown to dislike the character that breaks the rules and goes off on their own in order to solve the mystery. In this particular book the antagonist breaks all FBI protocol and arrests suspects without evidence, breaks into homes alone without warrants, etc. It may not bother other readers, but I just think it’s becoming too common to write characters like this; and I would find it more interesting to read a story that is closer to true life with good detective work that is realistically tied to what hoops agents have to jump through to properly catch a killer.
This book would have gotten an extra star had it kept the rule breaking to a minimum. I would still highly recommend this novel to those who love television thriller/drama Criminal Minds.
