Norse Mythologyby Neil Gaiman

THE GODS WERE DICKS! That’s what I learned while listening to this book (audible.com version). This novel is a selection of short tales taken from Norse Mythology and retold by Gaiman in his own words. There are stories of frost giants, blood mead that make poets eloquent, and the creation of Thor’s hammer. Oh, and Loki’s trickery…LOTS of Loki’s trickery.

I really liked this compilation of stories. I believe Gaiman did a fantastic job of choosing tales that had a linear story line and also a fantastic job of retelling them in an entertaining fashion. I’ve always loved stories of the Gods (Greek, Roman, and Norse) and their versions of how things came to being. So I loved seeing how the follies of the Gods would get them into sticky situations, how they used their cunning wits to save their hides, and how sometimes those deceits would come back to bite them in the ass later. I was left with a longing to hear more tales, but I’m sure there are so many it would take too long to tell them all. Overall I loved the book and it had a perfect wrap up with the battle of Ragnarok - the final battle of the Gods who were in conflict with Loki.

I would recommend you pick this collection of stories up if you’ve loved the Marvel movies involving Thor, or if you’ve dabbled in some of the other mythologies out there.
