Love & Gelatoby Evans Welch

Love & Gelato is a heart-warming story of a young girl navigating through her emotions after her mother dies and she is sent to Italy for the summer to meet her father for the first time. Waiting there for her is her mother’s journal she kept for the summer she spent in Italy falling in love, making friends, and learning photography. Now Lina follows along, finding the places her mom mentions and trying to understand why her mother never told her about this part of her life. Add in a few cute Italian boys to the mix and Lina’s life is about to change forever.

This was a speedy read and engaging. From the very beginning I wanted to know what was behind all of the secrecy. The banter and humor between the characters is charming, and for once the sad teen angst actually didn’t bother me because the girl’s mother had just died (I can’t think of a better reason for melancholy.) I also think I liked this book so much because there was that element of mystery which is always right up my alley. I couldn’t put this one down and finished is quickly just so I could know how Lina (and her mother’s) saga would end.

I would recommend this book to people who liked P.S. I Love You or the book Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
