The Eye of the World
Series: The Wheel of Time / Book: 1

All right dear followers, for 2018 I have given myself the reading challenge that I have dubbed the reading-incredibly-long-series-that-I-never-pick-up-because-they-are-so-long challenge. The first series of 2018 has somewhat been gently shoved into my lap and then held there until I couldn’t ignore it any longer.
Here’s the background: I have a friend from high school that has kept up with me on my book reviews long before my blog got up and running. We’ve talked about multiple novels but he suggested I read his favorite series, The Wheel of Time. With the speed of light I had tons of friends commenting on this Facebook post that they also were huge fans of the series. Some were people who I respected as bibliophiles and some were people I had never really talked about books with. So I gave it some research thinking I would quickly pick it up and see what all the fuss was about. That was when I learned the list of books numbered 14 AND each of them hovers around 800 pages! YIKES! I immediately dropped the idea and went back to my happy place of reading smaller books and zooming through them. But my high school friend had other plans for me and so he began a campaign of throwing memes up from The Wheel of Time series every time I would post a book review about something else.
TLDR (too long didn’t read); My friend wore me down and got me to commit a whole year to long book series. Below is my review of the first novel in the progression of The Wheel of Time.
The Eye of the World is one of those books that had my interest very early in the storyline. Within the first few chapters we find out there are three young men from the same village that are being sought out by The Dark One as they are clutch to either his release from bondage, or his demise. They are quickly whisked away by those opposing this evil and begin the journey to their ultimate destinies.
There, that’s what the storyline is if you reduce it down to its extreme base. BUT. THERE. IS. SO MUCH. MORE. TO. IT! This book is full of dark creatures, halfmen, ogiers, and magic. It is the PERFECT series to begin if you fell in love with the Lord of the Ring trilogy. It has the same feel of the epic journey to save the world from darkness. It made me wish I had the power to heal, the power to see the future, and the power to speak with wolves all throughout the book. I was intimidated by the fact that each book is 800 pages, but I whizzed through them like I haven’t in a long ass time. I was done within days and ready to see what happens next. I’m still curious how these characters are going to remain interesting for 13 more books, but I’m going to plod along and find out for myself….on to book two: The Great Hunt.
I would recommend this book to LOTR fans and to those who are aficionados of the Fantasy/Adventure genres.
