Carter & Lovercraft

I was on the hunt for “a book that involves a bookstore or library” for my POPSUGAR 2018 reading challenge. That’s how I happened to come across this novel which is inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft (the genius horror author who penned The Call of Cthulhu). This book throws a retired police officer into an unimaginable journey where nothing quite makes sense by human rationale. He will have to throw logic to the wind and trust his gut while he and his new business partner try to save the world from the alien gods of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories.
I picked up this book knowing that it was either going to be well done, and a true tribute to Lovecraft, or it would be overly hokey and barely readable. Luckily, for me, it was very satisfactory. Howard really is writing his own story, with just an inspiration from Lovecraft. I think this book would be a great read even if you’ve never read anything by the famous horror writer, but this novel is ten times better if you understand the mysterious world H.P. Lovecraft has built. Some of the characters from this book will make you think back to some of the creepy stories and add to the ominous feeling of mystery throughout this story. The ending was a bit confusing, and I think it would do me good to read it a second or third time, but ultimately I believe that is what the reader is supposed to feel like in the end. The look into what creatures lie beneath, and how they manipulate our world, is something that may be too large to comprehend. I think it was the perfect ending for a horror story.
I would recommend this book to fans of Lovecraft. I was also reminded of some of James Rollins’ stories throughout this novel, so I would also tell fans of his to try this one out.
