Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson

Astrophysics for People in a Hurry is a crash course in the cosmos and how it all comes together. Open the pages to learn everything from the micro (atoms and particles) to the macro (galaxies and the entire known universe). If you’re going to learn about these subjects as a layman, Tyson is the guy to learn it from.

I listened to this book on audio, and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s voice is magical. It pains me to say this as a lover of science, and as the partner of a bona fide science nerd, but that is where the praise stops for me on this one. Maybe it’s because I’m such a visual learner, but I had a legitimately difficult time following along with all of the scientific terms and concepts. Also, I’ve watched many lectures of Tyson’s and I thought his tempo was much faster paced and more mechanical than when he speaks during lectures; it felt far less conversational than he usually does. Additionally, I thought the subject matter jumped around substantially; I had a hard time keeping ideas straight in my mind.

Please don’t take this review to mean that I don’t love the subject or the author. But my advice on this one is to take the time to watch his AMAZING docuseries on Netflix:

I think that each of these series covers almost all the concepts covered in the books and production did an amazing job of adding graphics so that these high level concepts made a lot more sense (at least to me).
