20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Vern

This classic novel follows three men held captive aboard Captain Nemo’s futuristic submarine as they trek across the world under the ocean. There are many nautical wonders to see from battles with giant squid, shark hunting, and pearl hunting, to traveling under the South Pole.

As far as classics are concerned this one, for me, was a bit of a let down. There are small parts that are entertaining and action packed, but in between these portions are long and drawn out descriptions of science. These are not just small tid bits of background knowledge; it’s lists of ocean life and then pages of specifically classifying them like we did in Junior High biology. There are portions that drone on about physics, chemistry, and botany; the list goes on and on and I’m not sure a single science is left out. And then add on top of that, long and boring history lessons. I think part of my problem was that I listened to this novel on audio book instead of physically reading it, where I could have skimmed over the lists and minutia.

I’m going to keep this review short, because I don’t have a lot of good things to say about this one. I’ll take a page out of Tumper’s book

I would recommend this one to people who are trying to read as many classics as they can, or to people who are good at speed reading and can quickly scan through the monotonous lessons.
