Under the Dome by Stephen King

I was a little intimidated to start the book that would check off the “A book of at least 800 pages” on my reading challenge, so I’ve put it off until nearly the end. I chose Stephen King’s Under the Dome for this entry and I was so incredibly happy that I did. A thousand pages flew by and I couldn’t put the book down. You get to see what happens when a small Maine town is trapped within its boarders because of an invisible dome being placed around it. Shit begins to hit the proverbial fan when the corrupt town officials strike fear into the rest of the townsfolk and pit them against one another.

As it goes with many of King’s books, I was sucked in to the story line right away. He grips you with curiosity and doesn’t let you go until the last pages. Even though I put off such a large book, I also end up loving them because there is so much more room for multiple back stories that can weave together. I can’t write it down as a true complaint, but the characters in this book make you crazy through the majority of the book. I found myself thinking, “there’s no way they would get away with this…it’s too overboard!” But then I would stop and remember that there was no true law in the town other than those in charge; and when those people are manipulative sociopaths it becomes a little more realistic. After finishing the book I would say all my notes fall in the positive column and nothing in the negative.

This was a gripping read that I would recommend to lovers of Stephen King and the horror genre. I would also recommend it to people who couldn’t stop watching the documentary series: Making a Murderer.
