The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy

Series: Jack Ryan Series / Book: 1

I FINALLY finished The Hunt for Red October. I picked this one in order to check off " A book with a month or day in the title" in my 2017 reading challenge This book took me forever to read, and I know I will get a lot of lash back for saying so, but I really did not care for this book. It’s about a Russian submarine that has gone “missing” and while the entire Russian fleet is out to find it, the Americans know more about this operation then the Russians are being led to believe. Who will find the sub first, and why have they gone off the radar in the first place?

While I found the overall story line to be intriguing, I thought that Tom Clancy overused technical jargon to the point where I could barely follow along with what was happening. I was bogged down in naval codes and acronyms so much that I just couldn’t keep up with the story line. Once I started reading the first and last sentence in every paragraph and skipping to the parts where people were speaking to one another, it started to get better. But I don’t consider that to be any good way to have to read a book. And honestly, it just seemed to drrraaaagggg on and on. I am honestly curious to watch the movie that is based on the novel because I think it’s going to take the condensed version of what was interesting and throw in some action. I’ll post to my book vs. movie section later, but I’m thinking this may be one of those times I like the film better.

I would recommend this book to people who are already comfortable with the terms used in the Navy, or to people who like learning about all the technical aspects of a subject when they read a book. Otherwise, I would steer clear of this one.
