The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (AKA J.K. Rowling)

Series: Cormoran Strike Series / Book: 1

I am now able to check off “A book by an author that uses a pseudonym” by having read The Cuckoo’s Calling. The author, Robert Galbraith, is the pen name for the very famous J.K. Rowling (writer of the Harry Potter series for those of you stuck under a rock for the last 20 years). I wanted to pick a book by someone many people would already know, and also because it makes sense for these types of authors to write under pen names so they can get out from under the stigma of a certain genre or style. While listening to this book (this was an Audible read for me) and knowing that it was from Rowling, I could hear her voice through the story. But had I not know it was her before I picked it up I don’t think I would have thought twice about it. And I’m truly glad she wrote under another name, because this murder mystery series is definitely for adults. There is a lot of cursing and violence.

The novel is about a down-on-his-luck private detective who is hired by a very rich man to re-investigate the supposed suicide of his adopted sister. She was a famous model who had a rough life and many people surrounding her had enough motive for murder. What will detective Strike find out? Who needed this celebrity dead and why?

I really loved this book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a murder mystery, and this one didn’t disappoint. There are many novels where I am pretty certain of the culprit by about 2/3 of the way through the book. This one had so many clues, but none were in your face enough for me to have figured it out. I was on the edge of my seat, guessing along, until the very end. The book was well written (which I had no doubt it would be) and the characters have depth and grit. I’ll be picking up the next book in the series very quickly.

Models don’t eat pizza! But this video of turning a pizza INTO a model was just too funny not to share.
