Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams

Here’s a little background on how I came to read Tailchaser’s Song. I had a category on my reading challenge that was “read a book with a cat on the cover.” I am reading this so late in my challenge because I started researching books that would fit this category and quickly became disappointed that I was going to have to pick up a book I was almost guaranteed not to like. The books that populated in my search seemed crazy. For example, there is a book out there about a woman who solves murders with her cat as her sidekick detective. Yeah, I’m not about that life. So I set the category aside for later deliberation.

I’ve also started a subscription to Book Bath Box, which comes to my doorstep every quarter with a book, bath bomb, and other food and candle type goodies that are themed around the book. I finally got my first box in the mail and I’m so excited to see what I’ve received. I open it up to find a book with a cat on the cover. I had to laugh and tell myself: “I guess the decision has been made FOR me.” I was hesitant to start it, as all the other books I had researched involving cats didn’t seem so wonderful. I have now finished Tailchaser’s Song and I have to say….it was REALLY good.

It’s a story about a young male cat whose friend goes missing; there are other cats all over the community who are also disappearing. So Tailchaser and Pouncequick leave their home to search for their missing friend and a cause of the missing cats. Even just typing out the synopsis makes the book sound childish and boring (believe me, I thought the same thing).

I became engulfed in the story line. It is well written and the development of characters and the world they live in has depth. It was truly an epic tale of adventure, courage, and survival against some of the darkest forces imaginable. I couldn’t help but think of how much it reminded me of a blend between stories like The Hobbit (by Tolkien) and the Redwall series (by Brian Jacques). I’ve also heard it likened to Watership Down by Richard Adams. I would recommend this book to fans of those books and cat lovers alike.
