Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Series: Jurassic Park / Book: 1

Michael Crichton does it again! I have always wanted to read Jurassic Park, but it’s one of my all time favorite childhood movies, so I’ve put it off for quite awhile. My nephew ended up on a road trip with Adam and I a few weeks ago and heard parts of Crichton’s Timeline novel as we listened to it. He really liked the story and we told him the author was the same man who wrote the Jurassic Park series. Once he heard that he begged to get the first book on audio while we finished our road trip. Needless to say, we relented and started Jurassic Park on that excursion. I will keep this book review fairly short as almost everyone on the planet has seen, or at least knows about, the film adaptation. I think the book review might be a little boring for most of you who have seen the movie, but you might like my book vs. movie review.

The book is about an archeologist who is called to visit an island where a very rich man has dedicated his money to opening a theme park where dinosaurs have been resurrected and now roam the jungle lands. Before the park can open, things go wrong and the dinosaurs are able to escape their paddocks…while the guests are in the park! Now the visitors must get back to safety before the dinosaurs tear them apart.

Without trying to compare it to the movie too much (which is hard to do) I would say I loved this novel. I’ve always admired the science research he puts into each of his books and I really love the way Crichton balances that science with gritty action scenes. I found myself wondering what was around each corner of the park and what resurrected monster they’d run into next.

I would recommend this book to people who love Michael Crichton or James Rollins as authors. I’d also recommend it to readers who loved the movie growing up….it might not be as similar as you might imagine.
