Memoirs of a Geisha
This novel follows the life of Nitta Sayuri and her life as a geisha in Japan. You get to watch her enter the trade and learn all the beautiful skills of the geishas. We are also shown the saddest part of their world, where women's virginity is sold to the highest bidder and true love is only a dream.
What a great story! I'm having a hard time finding the right words to review it though. I love the Japanese culture and their literature. It isn't a story for those who need "ride off into the sunset" types of endings. It's well written and intriguing. It brings light to a world that seems to be from the imagination but was so real and intense. Highly recommended to those who are interested in a culture that is very different from our own.
